I used to be a chemistry teacher and taught year 7 to year 13. Now I do work with undergraduate university students and postgraduate students and provide training for them in the lab.

I haven’t worked as a teacher, but I have done some tutoring and mentoring. I do enjoy working with young people, so I run lots of fun slime workshops at science festivals around the country, and I go into local schools and do fun activities and give career talks. I think it is really important to go out and meet students and answer their questions, so kids can meet a scientist and be inspired by science careers. I never had any role models or mentors, and had never met a scientist, so I found it really hard to become a scientist as I had no-one to ask. I would like to make sure that I can help anyone interested in science as a career.

Yes I teach university students in cell biology, plant biology and evolution. This can be either in the laboratories (e.g. looking at seed development) or in classrooms. Next month I am taking a group of students to Norway on a fieldtrip to teach them about glacial ecology and the plants that live there. We will also look at pollinators in the mountains 🙂

Yes, I worked as a teacher for year teaching science and maths. That was before I went to university though. Now I help teach students Evolution, Statistics and Taxonomy (learning about the names of plants and animals). I also have a student who works with me who is doing a research project with me – this project will be what they hand in for their degree. I really enjoy teaching, it’s one of the best parts of my work.
