I wanted to be a park ranger because I wanted to try and protect the African wildlife from poachers and other human-related conflict. There are a lot of animals being hunted for their fur or horns and getting into trouble with local farmers. I thought If I went over, I could protect everything. However, it is a very big job and requires many many people!
The park authorities are firstly (and succeeding in) recruiting local people to become rangers. Getting local people understanding why we need to protect them and involved in their own countries wildlife is a fantastic way to help wildlife (this is known as wildlife stewardship). Sometimes people may have conducted illegal behaviour (e.g. selling fur) in order to help feed their families. People may not be as lucky as we are in the UK. Therefore wildlife stewardship helps provide funding for families whilst also protecting the wildlife.
